The City of Boise has closed Pond No. 1 at Esther Simplot Park

The City of Boise has closed Pond No. 1 at Esther Simplot Park due to the discovery of blue-green algae.

The type of algae found may produce toxins under the right conditions. All recreation in the pond is prohibited until further notice.

Pond No. 1 is the larger of the two ponds at Esther Simplot Park and it includes the children’s beach area.

Boise Parks and Recreation leaders made the call to close the pond out of an abundance of caution. Signs have been posted at the pond to notify citizens of the closure.

Blue-green algae that produce toxins are not uncommon in local ponds during the summer heat. This type of algae can be harmful to people and pets.

At this time, Esther Simplot Park Pond No. 2 and Quinn’s Pond remain open for recreational use.
