Counterfeit cellphone smuggling ring case pushed back

A trial in the case of a suspected massive counterfeit cellphone smuggling ring based in Boise has been pushed back to January.

A U.S. District Court judge on Monday rescheduled the trial to Jan. 22 in the case of a family and two colleagues accused of running the smuggling ring, after attorneys asked for more time.

The Idaho Press reports, the case involves the Babichenko family, eight of whom were arrested in August following a raid at Ada County homes, businesses and one church and school.

Police and prosecutors say those eight family members — as well as two other people — operated a multi million-dollar smuggling ring for more than 10 years, importing large shipments of counterfeit cellphones from overseas and repackaging them in a Boise warehouse.
