George Strait Adds New Trophy to His Case: Texas State Musician of the Year

Over his 35-plus-year career, George Strait has pretty much seen and done it all. The five-time Entertainer of the Year has sold more than 70-million albums, earned 60 No. 1 singles and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006.

King George’s trophy case is full, to say the least, but the Texas native will have to make a little more room for his new award: Texas State Musician of the Year.

George follows in the hallowed Lone Star State footprints of past winners Willie Nelson, Dale Watson, Lyle Lovett, Joe Ely, Billy Joe Shaver, ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons and more.

“It’s a great honor for me to be selected as Texas State Musician of 2017 and join this very prestigious list of other honorees,” said George in a press release. “I’m a very proud Texan and love to sing the praises of our great state every chance I get. Thank you very, very much.”

The Texas State Legislature will officially appoint George as the 2017 Texas State Musician on May 18 in Austin. Selections for the honor are made every two years.

If you’re interested in catching the Texas Musician of the Year in concert, George is playing a handful of tour dates in Las Vegas on July 28 and 29, Sept. 1 and 2, and Dec. 8 and 9.
