Thousands gather at Idaho Statehouse for a Black Lives Lost vigil

Thousands of people gathered at the Idaho Statehouse Tuesday evening for a Black Lives Lost vigil, honoring George Floyd and others who have been killed by police or fellow Americans in recent years and decades.

The vigil remained peaceful, consisting of speeches from organizers and a reading of names and brief moments of silence.

“It’s not a protest, it’s not a riot, it’s a vigil in every sense of the word. And it’s meant to be peaceful and we are going to do everything we can to keep it peaceful,” said organizer Whitney Mestelle told KBOI-2-News.

Mestelle organized this event with a friend, and recently other community organizers have joined their efforts.

Boise Mayor Lauren McLean and acting police chief Ron Winegar made a joint statement on public safety Tuesday and calmly asked folks who attend a candlelight vigil to come in peace and “respect and honor those who have lost their lives.”
